The story of Vitec Aloc

The idea for Aloc began with an interest calculation program developed in 1985, created to make it easier for the Copenhagen Stock Exchange to calculate effective bond yields on a PC. At a time when the PC was a new invention and securities were traded by hand, an electronic interest calculation program would prove to be revolutionary.

The man behind the calculation programs was Christen Sørensen, Chairman of the Stock Exchange, Chief Economic Adviser, Professor, and cand.polit, who on July 1, 1985 founded the company Aloc, a combination of the names Anne Louise and Christen, daughter and father. Mathematician Karsten Bruun Andersen was hired early on as a student assistant, helping calculate formulas for the interest program. However, it didn’t take long before Christen’s demanding role as Chairman of the Stock Exchange led him to sell the company to Karsten. Karsten put his mind to it, and soon a concrete business plan for Aloc took shape.

Initially, the Stock Exchange was the primary customer, with smaller brokers working onsite to trade securities. They became curious to see if it was possible to develop a trading system that would allow transactions to be carried out directly from the brokers’ own offices. Karsten quickly took up the challenge, and the trading system IDEAS (Interactive Dealing System) was born. A few years later, one of Aloc’s customers persuaded Karsten to take over the development of a small position-management program, originally built to keep track of a firm’s own securities positions, calculate returns, and more. That would turn out to be the first step toward the portfolio management system PORTMAN (Portfolio Management).

Through close customer dialogue and deep industry insight, Vitec Aloc makes a tangible difference by simplifying complexity and freeing up time for advisory work, decision-making, and value creation.

Since 2014, Vitec Aloc has been part of Vitec Software Group, a Nordic publicly listed software group headquartered in Sweden. Vitec takes a long-term approach, invests in stable companies, and has subsidiaries across the Nordic region. What they have in common is a focus on domain-specific expertise, high customer loyalty, and a strategy centered on durable development rather than short-term growth. This is one of the reasons we can also say that we are
“To rely on – today and tomorrow,” as Vitec’s brand promise goes.
